I sort of think of the core as the main "frequency", the strident pure tone coming out of the instrument, and the spread is the fluff around that makes it more than a mechanical single pitch. Making sure the core is there first, then what I do with that in how I carry my embouchure, my breath support, and feeling the whole body resonate and be at one with the instrument to "colour" that that core.

Not sure if that's what you're getting at.
