 Cor Anglais: low C

Hi all,

I'm having issues with the low C on my Cor Anglais.

The low B, C# and D are fine, but the C is very difficult, and 80% of the time jumps the octave. My teacher has tried a lot of things, such as adjusting screws and checking pads for leaks and gunk, and she can't find out why. It's not the reed, as she tried it with her own reed, and it happens for her as well.

There are no cracks, and no leaks, that we know of. It's only about 14 months old (It's a Howarth 40c Dual system), and there is nothing wrong that either of us can see.

Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Thanks :)

Make sure the spring on the F vent is strong enough as it has to hold the F vent closed when both RH fingers 2 and 3 are closed. If the spring tension is too light, the F vent can get blown open on the low notes from D downwards.

Due to the design and heavy gauge flat spring on the F vent on S20, S20c and S40c cors, the RH 2 and 3 fingerplates also have to be sprung heavily enough so either of them can counteract the F vent's heavy gauge flat spring and hold it open. It takes some balancing to get it right and so it doesn't feel too heavy under the fingers.

Pro level cors have a much more complicated forked F vent mechanism which is lightly sprung (relying on finger pressure and being in good regulation instead of on spring tension to close it).

The opinions I express are my own.
