Outdoor Christmas carol season starts in 2 months, and I swore I would never play my Marigaux outside, even in 'summer', since our December nights can still get quite cool. I promised myself I would buy a plastic oboe for this purpose before we got to that time.
I was originally going to purchase a Selmer 104 or similar (keep in mind I am only going to play this thing a couple of times a year, and no one will hear me anyway). Price is definitely a consideration, otherwise I would just pick up a Fox.
The dealer who sold my Cabart for me a year ago, who are extremely trustworthy, have for sale an Arioso oboe. They usually call a spade a spade when it comes to ISOs (instrument shaped objects), as evidenced here: http://www.ozwinds.com.au/boston-clarinet-used-05060-p-2375.html They haven't done so in this case.
I am assuming an Arioso is a Chinese instrument, but I have heard not-so-bad things about them on a few forums (it was either IDRS or ABRSM, I forget). My reason for going this way over the above mentioned brands is because it will be serviced by a double reed specialist, come with an approval period and a 3-month service warranty. If I go the other way, it will likely be That Auction Site, and who knows what I will get (besides, the Aussie dollar is not great against the US at the moment).
Thoughts? Experiences? I want to stay as close to (or under) the $1000 mark as possible.
As a side note, when did used Fox oboes get so darn expensive? I haven't seen a 333 under about $2300 in the last couple of months!
