Loree's are running around 8000 right now for a standard AK. Royale's are running upwards of 9-10K. Rough Figures...
Hinikers -- you are likely not going to find a used one. I have seen only 2 used ones over the past years. One was a Snakewood (similar to violet wood) that was over 10,000.
Cocobolo versus Grenadilla -- many say Cocobolo have a sweeter and lighter sound more appropriate for small space and chamber playing. It also tends to crack much quicker and easier. I have had three students with Cocobolo horns and known a couple people with them. Each of them have crack numerous times compared to Grenadilla of the same make.
As a side note, I have not seen nearly as many of the Howarth Cocobolo oboes cracking as readily as the Loree horns.
As I have posted on other areas of this site, I am currently playing on a Loree AK that I love that is about 12 years old. Its a true Gem. However, my next horn (within a year) will NOT be Loree. There are some other GREAT makers making horns that are more stable (wood aging) and flexible, colorful, have more personality, than current Loree's. That is not to say a Loree might not be the best choice.
My personal recs are:
If you can get your hands on a Hiniker -- Amazing horns. However, good luck getting one. If Jonathan Marzluf is on this board, he was selling one some time ago. There is a current waiting list as long as Laubin's waiting list right now I think. Maybe not quite as long.
Bulgheroni -- Opera and MUSA models are freaking fantastic! I know several people playing on them. Blind play test compared to a Loree, the Bulgheroni blew Loree away.
Howarth -- GREAT horns as well! The XL models are fantastic.
Laubin and Covey horns are great as well, if you can find the right one that matches your playing style and reed style.
Hope this helps!
You might check out Peter Hurds awesome site at www.oboes.us and check out the "makers and commentary section". Peter has done GREAT research and is very honest and truthful about all of the major brands out there. Very Unbiased as well....a GREAT resource!
Hope this helps,
