I am also a flautist by trade (and profession!) who got sick of never being needed. I can relate so well to your sentiments!
The last time I joined a community orchestra that was forming, I told them I was a professional flute player but I also played oboe. They said that since they already had 7 flute players in line and no oboe, that was definitely what they wanted!
My first oboe was an old Cabart. It had an ugly 'repaired' crack, the keys were almost black and I had to rely on an elastic band to seal the octave keys. But for the $300 I spent on it, and the $400 I spent getting it to play, I figured it was totally worth it to discover that I loved playing oboe, rather than shell out big dollars and hate it!
FWIW, I spent the first three months shut up in a back room with the thing before I let anyone hear me... :P
Good luck!
