Just a note to tell you that my first oboe teacher, Raymond Dusté passed away yesterday morning. Ray had studied with Tabuteau during WWII when the Army stationed him in Philadelphia and later moved to the SF Bay Area, where he started his local career in the Peninsula Symphony, a community orchestra. He auditioned for and won the English Horn chair in the San Francisco Symphony in the late '50's. The Symphony was also the SF Opera orchestra during opera season, and when season overlap conflicts split the orchestras, Ray chose to stay with the Opera Orchestra where he played until his retirement.
Ray gave me my first oboe lessons, later took me along with him to church and chamber jobs and still later to my first professional gigs, sitting along side him. He taught me most of what I know about the music business and a lot of what I know about life and I owe him a great debt as a great teacher.
He was also an early teacher of Patrick McFarland, former EH player in Atlanta, and, perhaps the most important, Richard Woodhams first teacher...
R.I.P. Ray...
