Don Plesnicar, John Hayden - Still Around?

Years ago I ordered oboe/english horn can from Don Plesnicar and John Hayden. I doubt Plesnicar is around anymore (or at least not selling cane anymore). Not sure about John Hayden though. I ordered tons of cane but I'm running low now and I don't know who to order from anymore. Stuart Dunkel maybe? Also can't decide on what type of cane (Duste, Glotin, etc.) or tubes to order (I currently have 47 mm nickel/silver Glotin tubes). This can be a difficult question to answer though because everyone has a different opinion and can also depend on the type of oboe you have, the type of sound you want, and how you play. Just wondering if anyone has suggestions though. It has been years since I ordered cane and tubes.

Greetings! I do recall reading several years ago in IDRS of Don Plesnicar's passing--and I have not heard that anyone continued with his business. I don't know about John Hayden. It surely puts you in a pickle when your cane guy leaves this world! (I always bought from Wally Bhosys, also passed). I now buy from Roger Miller--he has sold me some cane that I'm happy with. But I do miss the conversations with Wally about technique and oboes--he had a 1921 "LL" Series Loree too--2 serial numbers away from mine, and taught me so much about alternate fingerings on this oboe.
These senior statesmen of the cane world can teach you alot.

I too played Hayden and Pleznicar cane and have some stock-piled from many years back. And sadly those supplies dwindle.

My most favorable, meaning I can actually use the cane when it is purchased Vs. waiting 5 - 10 years, has been David Weber's Grimaud cane in various diameters and RDG's RDO cane which probably produces the best overall and longest lasting reeds.

Still with cane, I think the Buffet model of 'buy and hold' works best overall. The RDO has been back-ordered for quite a while, so I tried some Chinese cane at IDRS last year and made a few reeds that work, 5 out of 5, but not that I love them. I think that is some buy and hold cane, at least for my style of working. But I think a couple years will help, and then I'll try it again.

Speaking of Hayden and Pleznicar cane, I am still using some I bought 25 years ago and gettting great results. Only wish I'd bought lots more back in the day.

If wishes were horses...

Updated after I played all 4 sources today. I'd say the Chinese reed improved although I only kept the best of the 5 in my case.

In tune all over except the high d sags 2 Hz, so manageable.

F1 (hard) from Hayden is still the all-time best. Current best is RDO from RHD.

I'm happiest with David Weber's Grimaux cane. The Grimaux I've had stored for a few years is even better.

Thanks all for your replies. You can tell by the names I mentioned that it's been awhile since I ordered cane. It's time consuming to find another supplier when you need to, so the suggestions help. I will try some of the cane and suppliers mentioned and see what I think. I bought a ton of cane years ago because I noticed that the cane seemed to get better as it aged (kind of like fine wine, lol), so I bought enough to last me for years. Sadly, this supply has diminished so time to find a new supplier and type of cane that I like.
