You can just rub the end of the block on the tenon thread as you'd use lipstick cork grease, but with a bit more force (but not too much).
If you do want to melt it, then after it's applied, use a heated knife blade (dipped in boiling water and dried off or gently heated over a smokeless flame) to melt it into the thread.
You can wax thread for restringing joints and binding reeds with by first running the thread across the wax (or the wax across the thread) and it'll take to the thread, then wind the thread in the normal manner. The wax will also help keep things airtight.
