I'm wanting to buy a baroque oboe now, but without the ability to play test a ton of them, I'm seeking general tone characteristics of different models, before I order one. Is there such a thing as a "classic" tone for each of them and maybe a video showing a people playing specific models/makers? (yes, I know the reed can make a huge difference) Or specific styles of playing and the people who play that way?
I'm currently just learning to play on a Stanesby. I've briefly for a minute tried a Denner (much bigger sound). And that's the extent of my experimentation. Was suggested to go for a Saxon model made by Joel Robinson, although since it's sort of a "new" design, does that make it any less baroque-y sounding (or more late baroque)? I love the reed trumpet-y sound and mellowness of the baroque oboe, so I'm assuming more projection and focus aren't the primary things I'm looking for. ??? Or at this stage in my learning, is the main factor just getting something easy to play on (which the Saxon is supposed to allow). I have no teacher.
