[If this posts twice, something happened to my computer...]
"If soaking cane in dog pee would improve the reed's playing or longevity, 99% of oboists would willingly do it."
Well, Craig, I do play clarinet but barely with competence, mostly double for pit orchestra... Well, OK, I like playing bass clarinet but not as much as ther double reeds.
I believe you about the mouldy cane, and think that maybe the mould would make the bamboo fibres more flexible -- temporarily -- but I wouldn't go so far as to Intentionally treat my cane with Noxious Fluids (even if they purportedly come out of a warm mammal Sterile). I'll stick with water, thank you very much, and will prefer it mould-free. Besides, I don't really want any mould spores slipping down inside my beautiful oboe... have heard horror stories of that happening (during a flood)...
[and to assure you I am free of bias, I've two adorable little mutts who have the occasional accident in my home... If I treated cane as you describe, the Odor of Association would either knock me off my chair or I'd start cracking up in the middle of an expressive solo!]
this is turning out to be a rather odd and amusing thread...
