When squeezing the reed down, it safest to have a mandrel inserted in the reed, so that the tube's opening isn't accidentally crushed. It's remotely possible that if the mandrel doesn't fit right, then maybe the tubes the maker is using aren't good. The squeezing process also has to be done gently, so as to not crack the cane.
