Oh yeah - players who roll down LH finger 1 instead of lifting it prefer the top plate to open fully (I think they prefer it like this on the continent). If it's screwed right down so it opens a tiny amount, then that won't serve as an open C#.

The tone quality will never be perfect with the trill toneholes - they're purpose is solely for trilling so tone quality isn't paramount as long as the trill note is near enough in tune (as opposed to the main note). I've never found any oboe with a perfect B-C# trill - they're all passable, but not perfect.

Fossati designed a piggy-back style key so only one tonehole is involved, but the tone quality of the B-C# trill is really compromised. There's a demonstration of it with audio on their site: http://www.fossati-paris.com/innovations.php?ref=monocadence
