I just needed to share an experience. We have a small adult concert band that is maybe like a B level high school band. We play easy music and have tuning issues etc. I'm the only oboe. Last night I played a simplified version of "Gabriel's Oboe" for band and oboe. I struggled with fear and played it all the way through with only a few rhythmic glitches and many more breaths than I need in practice. By my judgement it was mediocre at best. I was blown away by the appreciation of our small audience! Even our band members took time to say how much they enjoyed it! My take away from that is that music doesn't have to be perfect to be appreciated. I (and other oboists that I know) can get so fixated on perfection that we lose sight of the simple appreciation of music. I'm still trying not to beat myself up and I'm off to do it again in an hour at an elementary school assembly and with a horrible cold that struck last night - but you know - maybe it will still be enjoyed!
