I agree with the mediocrity comment...
Thinking back to the wee days, I am very grateful that I had the opportunity to play on my teacher's leftover reeds. Her leftovers weren't perfect by any means, but at least it felt like there was life in the reed. There was character, and I could really feel that I could get my sound going somewhere...if I was only strong enough! Having weak little oboe chops is no reason why one can't play a crummy reed. It's part of the learning process!
I still think that even though many amateur oboists are very busy with the rest of their lives, I don't think it's too much to ask to spend 15-20 minutes twice a week making reeds. 40 minutes a week! That's really all the "active" time it takes. (Soaking cane takes a while, but demands no active participation)
Perhaps the reason I'm so "pro-reedmaking" is that I have an adult student, and, despite the fact that she *does* have better tone on the reeds that I have given her, she plays with much more energy and satisfaction on the reeds she has made herself. What more could I ask for?!
Perhaps all this "anti-reedmaking-stick-to-the-store-d-ness" is due in part to the fear and uncertainty associated with creating a reed...."Can I really do this? Will I destroy this reed? What will I do if I have no reeds?"
The first advice: "One thing at a time."
It's unnecessary to be able to create a fab reed right from day one. Indeed it is impossible. So maybe one might consider reed-making as a co-requisite of the oboe. Learn to play AND to make reeds at the same time. After a month or two one might be able to make the scary transition from store to house reeds. It takes only one or two rehearsals on a house reed to give one confidence to keep at it. It's scary as stink the first time but totally rewarding and esteem-boosting after....
