I agree with the suggestion that you take it in for an assessment (with a view to repair it, put it into 'playing condition' AFTER the (hopefully qualified) repair-person gives you the evaluation result. I would NOT encourage your child to play on it before that happens.

I have an 80-yr old oboe with a bore that's curved (due to dryness? age? both?), no cracks, and it plays pretty beautifully. The keys are pitted too; You can't tell a book by its cover.

I am So GLAD that you are allowing your son a chance, though: a child should be encouraged to play the Oboe especially if they are fixated on it.
I hope the instrument is nicer than anyone expects and that it serves him well.
