Hi experts,
How often DOES one 'get' to play the musette? Is the repertoire old, or new? In what key is it generally pitched?
All just for curiosity, I don't plan to own one... but life could pitch another surprise, one never knows...

I recently accomplished a search for musette music.
I found 19 pieces, most written within the past 10 years. Only about 3 or 4 pieces
were from before 1970.
Oboe soloist Ernest Rombout is the foremost advocate for "piccolo oboe"/
musette nowadays. He has a cadre of composers writing musette pieces for him routinely, including Samuel Andreyev.
Ernest also plays piccolo Heckelphone. About half a dozen pieces pieces or so have been written so far specifically requiring piccolo Heckelphone instrumentation.
Whereas, the piccolo oboe has a very limited use or appeal in my estimation, I surmise that if Heckel were to revive production of the piccolo Heckelphone, it would inspire composers and players.
Sadly, only about 6 or 7 finished piccolo Heckelphones exist.

The nearest instrument to a piccolo Heckelphone (or Terz-Heckelphone) that's still in production is probably an Eb sopranino sax, so that gives some idea what they sound like.

The musette has been used by Tom Boyd in movie studio recordings. I once heard him play it in a concert. He probably has a Loree in Eb.

According to Loree's website, Loree musettes are pitched in F (and descsend to low Bb) - Marigaux and Patricola musettes are pitched in Eb (and descend to low B).

Marigaux seems to offer different size 'tops' for their musettes; would this make them keyed differently or just affect pitch?

Heckelmaniac:
I remember reading about the piccolo Heckelphone in an instrument encyclopedia close to 30 years ago! I had always been curious about these and wished to play one... because, back then, I was obsessed with getting the highest notes possible out of the instrument.
Today, I am more obsessed with getting a "baroque-ish" sound out of the instrument.... hence my desire for a d'amore that does not sound like a miniature English Horn.
Super-cool work and report, Peter!
