I remember a recording session I played a few years ago where the tech, a middle-aged unreconstructed hippie type with a scraggly beard, pony tail and overalls snuggled his mike right up next to the bell of my oboe.
I told him that, in my experience, the results were much better with the mike a couple of feed in front of the bell.
He looked at me and said mildly, "OK. Let's do it my way first and if you don't like it, we'll try your way."
I said OK, and we did the take. When they turned on the studio speakers I was listening to the best recording of myself I ever heard.
Turns out this guy was a legend in the business and had presided over many of the NY/Bernstein recordings.
I'm sure the ribbon mike he was using had something to do with it as well, but I certainly learned something about my own preconceptions.
