If you have attended the IDRS convention this year or previously, I'd like your opinion on the following:
Do you think the noise at the oboe sellers booths make it too difficult to compare instruments?
I might be able to go to L.A., in which case I would stop by RDG to try out whatever they have in stock. but they don't carry all the makers that would show-up at an IDRS convention - on the other hand, I can probably try them out in a quiet place where I can better compare with my current Loree....
Any thoughts? Thanks.

Hi Robin,
I tried several different oboes at Tempe and wasn't bothered too much by the noise. I was more worried that my playing didn't stack up very well compared to all the wonderful playing that you can hear there!
But it all mattered even less when I found that the vendors I was dealing with were quite happy for you to take the oboe up to your hotel room for further testing. With a little organization you could end up A/B comparing your top choices in the quiet and privacy of your own room.
There is therefore some advantage in staying at the hotel where the convention exhibition is being held.
Cheers,
Gerry L

I agree w/Gerry L... testing oboes and ehorns was fine in all the din and if I'd had more time I could have gotten away to a quieter location.
I was hoping to video/audio record for later eval., and posts out here and thought there was way too much noise for that to work well, though.

O.K., that settles it!
Now I only have to see if it will interfere with a possible trip to Europe where I could also try Dupin..... any other recluse extraordinaries you know of?
IDRS 2012, here I come!... and with an on-site hotel room to boot!
