Today we had our annual state band championships (concert band, tomorrow is brass band). Our test piece was Vesuvius (Ticheli) which has a gorgeous oboe solo in the middle. Our performance was 40mins (test, hymn, march and entertainment pieces), plus we did a 40 min warm up beforehand.
This time last year, I only participated in parts of the warm up in order to not tire the embouchure, and still managed to fatigue on stage. This year, I actually got physically tired (my arms actually started to give out on me!) before becoming embouchure tired and my chops never gave out once. Progress!! (Of course, this year I have a beautiful oboe to help me out!)
Monday is the chamber and solos sections, and I am playing the Cimarosa concerto (1st and 2nd movts). It will be the first time I have actually performed solo on oboe (I've performed chamber, orchestra and band, but never an 'I'm the only one on stage' performance). At this point in time, I feel privileged to have already been through this hundreds of times on another instrument!
Just thought I'd share some moments of personal musical achievement.
