Remember WEATHER: its the big reed killer!
=> Other reed makers might live in areas with a different climate than yours. This means that they might make excellent reeds that can simply be useless for you.
I fully agree with GoodWinds about keeping your teacher as a model. Maybe you'll change your technique radically in 5 or 10 years, but in the meantime, your teacher is the only one who can help you "fix" reeds or point out what to look for.
If you make reeds differently, the s/he might not be able/willing to help.
Furthermore, I fully and strongly posit that the "looks" of a reed are meaningless (if your teacher can't help): the process might make 2 reeds look really different, yet play almost the same.
