If I ever leave my oboe in the car, which is rare, I cover it with both a blanket and the sun-reflecting thing, mostly to keep temperature at bay. (I also insulate it while I'm driving between home and concert hall.) I would not leave it in the car for more than a few minutes if the weather is very cold OR very hot (like the others). And, just having had other instruments stolen from my car (which has an anti-theft device on it), I don't recommend leaving it, period.
I don't leave it in the trunk, for shock as well as temperature reasons.
I've even had recorders treated with a wax sealant 'melt' on warm days.
I liked the advice of the guy with the dog... or the rifle. Basically, if you value it, treat it that way.
