Congrats for hanging in there and for finding a good teacher.

I liked Robin's response a lot.

Funny, oboe has a legacy of some great players being very hard on students, and I have always despised that aspect of their character.

And I am talking about some of the greats here. People whose playing alone is inspirational. But what drove them to abuse their students? Always puzzled me.

On the other hand, great players like John Mack were also gentle and effective coaches. Hoardes of his followers continue to share that legacy, so there are many great resources available. Don't ever settle for less.

Not that some students don't need a kick in the butt sometimes, but most by far are not destined for great careers in orchestras. Myself included, and to this day I continue to adore the oboe and respect the wonderful players and gentle coaches I had the please\ure to study with along the way.
