I have about 7 or 8 oboe repair specialists all over the US that accomplish
repair work for me- I do not do any repair myself.
Of late, I usually take any oboe or English horn overhauled by one of the top repair persons and send it to yet another oboe repair specialist for review, a second set of eyes.
Seems like almost every repair person will miss something here and there
along the way.
THE most frustrating aspect of the oboe business is how long it now takes to have thorough-going overhauls completed. Since so few musicians seem to be purchasing new instruments, the demand for resuscitating older instruments is way off the charts. It seems that every first class oboe repair specialist I know of has a huge backlog of overhaul work stacked up. I have a myriad of instruments sent out for overhaul. It is not at all uncommon to wait 6 months to well over a year for instruments to come back from overhaul.
One of my favorite oboe repair persons, Paul Woltz, can schedule an hour
appointment just about anytime to render emergency repairs.
However, if you wish a ask Paul for a compete overhaul, it can take
well over a year.
I neglected to mention for oboe repair persons in Washington (well, close to Washington) is Sandro Masullo (Masullo Music) in Burnaby, British Columbia.
With best wishes,
Peter
