PTFE tape is porous - you can see this when you leave a reed to soak as the wrapping goes transparent as the water soaks into it. It turns white again when it dries out.
Likewise with Gore-Tex pads (as fitted on Buffet clarinets) - when cleaning them with alcohol on a cotton bud they go clear as soon as the alcohol makes contact and you can see through to the layer of goldbeater's skin underneath. Again they return to white once the alcohol evaporates.
