 Robo-Oboe?
Author: Chris P

As I've only recently found out about Toyota's robot trumpet player http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7P7KZVJG-VU&feature=related I wonder how long it'll be before they have a robo-oboist?

I'm very impressed with them - half-valving, lip bending and the high notes are something I'd never have expected in a million years, and I honestly didn't think android brass players would have ever been a possibility.

Obviously a good synthetic double reed will have to be developed before it can go near one, so maybe sax playing robots will be the first step towards reaching this goal.

And would robo-oboists have synthetic reed paranoia (in the way androids dream of electric sheep)?

Well, they've had 6 years to come up with a robot oboe, if it was gonna happen, it should have happened by now.

Not sure the skull will make it widely acceptable!

Here's another: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6h_enH4bxo watch at 2:10 for a classic!

Found a flute robot that doesn't have a bad tone, but doesn't tongue the notes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYDW2A5-Cbw

Chris:-,

I don't know if you've seen this one or not. It's another by the same robot:

By the way, I like the robot with the skull, I think it gives him character!

I shudder to think that even a well-designed machine could replicate the subtle and expressive convolutions we humans must go through to produce that beautiful emotive tone that is what we're all after, playing the oboe.

Robo-oboe sounds like a nightmare to me!
