I am an adult amateur who has been doing this for 4 1/2 years now, and I find that for me it's not a question of guilt--it's a question of survival. If I go a day without at least spending 10 minutes playing some scales, when I do come back to it, the embouchure and tone have definitely deteriorated. And the more days I go without playing, the worse it gets. If I go 3 days without playing, I've basically gone back in time about 6 months and my tone is completely gone and I have to start from scratch for the next two days with slow careful scales and long tones.
Also, I find that I lose the stamina to play for longer than a couple minutes, the longer I go without playing. The lip loses it, and also the right hand gets tired and can't hold it. I assume this is because I am 50-something and when you're older, you don't gain muscle mass and strength as easily as you did when you were 20.
