 Re: Density and thickness micrometer

jhoyla is correct that the 'micrometers' sold are made from the same precision tools that are used in machine shops worldwide. (The tool in not a micrometer, by the way - it is a dial indicator. Google both terms to see the difference...)

To buy the indicator by itself, any machine shop supply house can sell you one. Different makes are somewhat different prices but just as you can bu a $20 watch that keeps perfect time, they are all plenty good enough - there is not a 'better' quality that would matter to us. The digital versions are a very pretty but expensive overkill. They don't deliver any more accurate results than the analog version.

If you have one giving unsatisfactory results, you could replace the indicator in your existing stand. If you do, be sure to measure the stem of the indicator. Depending on where it was made it will be either .375" (3/8") or 8mm.

The density measuring tool will be found at woodworkers supply houses - look at Rockler and Woodcraft.

I've never heard of one tool doing both functions.
