Has anyone ever used a jeweller's file when adjusting reeds?

I was at an orchestra rehearsal last week and the bassonist was using one to adjust his reed. It looked to be a pretty foolproof way of taking a tiny amount off a basson reed and I wondered if it would work on an oboe reed as well.
