Howard,

I understand you predicament perfectly. When I first began playing in high school - I had a private instructor who fostered very poor - if not terrible habits upon me. After not playing for 25 years - I began again - a clean slate! I then began to learn proper Oboe technique and approach.

As for the Silken Ladder - try note groupings - where one phrase or note naturally leads to the next groups of notes. It takes you away from the minutiae of micromanagement of each note - to longer more musical phrases which then helps your technique. Also try singing the phrases before you play them. Also play the phrases very slowly!!

I recommend the book Sound in Motion by David McGill - it is a fantastic book - you can buy it on Amazon.com. It discusses the topic of note grouping and musical expression as it relates to technique and more.
