"I mention all of this just to state that while reeds are important, don't forget the most important aspect of playing is the player. A friend starting at Oberlin this year told me that Alex Klein is wary of freshmen who can make fantastic reeds, namely because he believes they become to dependent upon the reed rather than themselves."
I personally don't believe that playing the Oboe should be a struggle to compensate for inferior reeds. If this is the norm - then woe to all of us!
Playing the Oboe is difficult enough - I believe playing with inferior reeds will only lead to bad habits.
One needs to be free of the reed to concentrate on musical expression and the musical line.
"The reed needs to work for the player and not the other way around."
So the time consuming struggle for great reeds continue ..........................
Although, I do realize that at times - you have to work with what you have -great reeds do change their personalities; unfortunately many times just before a concert - one still needs to make beautiful music whether the reed cooperates or not! And this is where the air stream, phrasing, momentum, vibrato, etc. all need to be very well developed.
