Cracks can start anywhere, not just pillar holes or toneholes.
Common places for cracks on oboes is between the top joint trill toneholes, the section of the top joint in the vicinity of the 8ve vents and between socket rings and the nearest toneholes to them. Cracks that don't terminate in a tonehole are most likely to spread for most or all the length of the joint, but they can always be pinned if they're not serious.
