I think you probably have to do the experiment! There's lots of arundo growing around here, and the stuff is apparently pretty bad for making reeds--it grows to fast in the California heat, and doesn't get hard enough. One person I talked to who does use the stuff for reeds says he only harvests it after cold winters, when it actually experiences a freeze--but it's still pretty soft, and the reeds he makes look real short--maybe to compensate for the lack of hardness. Since south-east England is a little more temperate, you may have better luck. But the stand may not be big enough to have a reasonable number of pieces of the right diameter.
