Mike,

Try soaking it 25 or so minutes in hot tap water & then tie. If that doesn't work, try cold tap water for about double that time. Cane ideally should start to sink after about 20 minutes in hot tap water. The hot tap water cools to tepid quickly. I suspect the extended soaking you have been giving this cane has been working against you. If the cane cracks under the thread, that is OK. Immediately after tying, scrape the tip fairly thin & chop it open. Be sure to pare off the ears before tying. Of course, it could be bad cane, but I doubt it. I've used factory gouged Rigotti (Rigotti), Neuranter (Justin Miller) & Glotin (Nielsen) 12.5 mm. in diameter, which I shape on a Hubbard (Westwind) Giacobassi tip, with good success. The middle of the finished tip of the tip should be between 0.10-0.12 mm. thick.

Best,

john
