What oboe have you currently got?

Adding the D#-E split trill mechanism is a pretty extensive alteration (though that's not to say it can't be done). It may not add much to the value of the oboe - and probably only a fraction of the cost of the alteration so it may not be economical depending on the make or model, but if you can justify it there's no reason not to have it done.

Here's what is done:

The feather key barrel will need a bridge fitted to the underside in the area of the RH3 tonehole, then the key barrel is cut away from the inside to leave a gap and a linkage piece with an adjusting screw is made and fitted to this (it's loose on the key barrel and only comes into play when the LH Eb key is used). A retainer hoop may need to be fitted to keep the feather keys from flexing when using the LH Eb key.

The existing fingerplate for RH3 is removed, then the split plate mechanism is made and fitted - possibly with an extra spring for the outer ring so the F# vent (in between RH1 and 2) doesn't carry the weight of the key if it's not sprung (and this can cause the F vent to misbehave if the spring tensions aren't balanced well).

You may need the F key touch either built up or replaced with a taller one to make it easier to reach now the RH3 split plate has gained considerable height. All the keywork alterations are silver plated and refitted, and then padded, corked and regulated.
