 Cracked Oboes

A friend of mine has a Howarth XL oboe which is about 2 1/2 years old and she noticed a crack between the A and B keys just yesterday.

As far as she knew, she did not play the oboe directly after being out in the cold/vice versa. Do these things happen over time? I didn't think that an oboe that was blown in had the capacity to crack unless there was an extreme change in temperature.

I think it is fair to say that a Marigaux oboe, for example, would be far more prone to cracking in any case because they do not season the wood for enough time. But with a Howarth..?

Perhaps it's because recently the weather here has changed so very frequently? Suddenly very cold and windy... dry one day, very rainy the next..

Any answers?
