 Re: Oboe/EH question

I agree that playing cor anglais is far easier and far more rewarding than playing oboe. I'm a lot more relaxed when playing cor (and d'amore) as I know it'll let me get away with playing on reeds that aren't completely up to scratch whereas oboe reeds have to be spot on otherwise they won't be having any of it - oboes are far too picky when it comes to reeds and will let you down in the worst manner - they won't speak easily (but will speak abruptly), they pack up on diminuendos, they cause tuning problems on certain notes, etc. etc.

With the lower breath resistance on cor, you can get more air through it - so this can be beneficial to your oboe playing if you need to be heard when the trumpets are blasting out behind you. Also the broader, fuller tone you make on cor could also help develop a much fuller, richer tone on oboe.

Just an observation, but I find playing oboe pieces on cor much easier than on oboe - playing them as written so the fingerings are (mostly) identical. Not sure if it's a psychological thing, but I can get around the tricky bits much easier on cor than on oboe. Maybe thye lower breath resistance on cor also lowers the stress levels!

But what isn't there to like about the sound of a cor? That's the only real reason I took up oboe - so I could play cor!

The opinions I express are my own.
