The Oboe BBoard

Hey guys,
Long time, no.. post.
Anyway, finally found this forum again. I have a question. On my lower notes something is mis-adjusted, and has been the entire time I've had it, no matter who I bring it to. But I have never just had the bottom pads replaced and keys adjusted because I haven't had the money to do it. At least I don't think I have.
When I play low notes - starting with the F above middle C and going all the way down to Bb - there's a gurgling sound that would make someone think there was water in a pad down there, which there isn't - I've checked time and time again. When I used to play on this oboe, I had somehow found a way to get by it, but it required hard-pressing of the keys and the forming of bad habits to fit the oboe's problem.
First, if any of you have had this problem and know the solution, PLEASE don't hesitate to tell me.
Secondly, if someone knows how much it costs to have the bottom tenon joint completely repadded and adjusted, please tell me that as well.
I still play oboe, just not this one. I'm teaching my younger brother how to play, but with his small hands I would much rather have a nice beginnger oboe than this intermediate model until he gets used to playing it, in general.
Thank you very much, please respond ASAP.
Corinne

Hi Corinne,
I know what you mean about not having the $. But if you want good work, PLEASE get your oboe to a reputable shop where someone has been fixing oboes for YEARS.
I would also recommend your having the entire instument evaluated, or at least maintained. I'm going to swallow the repair bill and get mine done -- it's past due!!
warmly,
mary AKA GoodWinds

I live up in WI and was able to have a tenon crack repaired (invisibly) for $45 on my Loree. A complete cleaning with keys removed, repad (as needed) and regulation was about $295. Not from a specialized oboe shop, but a music store who happened to have an oboe specialist (I got his name by calling the oboe professors at the local colleges - they both gave his name).

Thank you very much for that information. Was it $295 for the entire oboe or just for the bottom joint?
Thanks

Corrine -- Take GoodWinds' advice and have the entire instrument checked. Often the problems which show up on lower notes are caused by small leaks in pads in the upper joint. In fact, that is the first place to look to solve the problem.

... as a wry aside, and nothing to do with your actual situation, i was having trouble with my low B & Bb the other day, they just wouldn't sound at all, the mechanical looked fine, the pads were closing, i was using C key as well, nothing looked bent since last time i played and put oboe away, the reed was playing everything else and had played low B's before
... big mystery ...
... then i remembered i'd stuffed the silk in the bell

If you can get the whole schmeer done for $295, I will be amazed.
Back in the 80s, I used to budget $100 for an oboe-maintenance visit.
Now I'm almost scared to take mine in...
That silk swab comment was a cute one.

Haha, yeah, I did that at least 3 times last school year and then decided I would just have to put the swab in a pocket of my messenger bag that I use for my oboe, rather than put it in the oboe case anymore.

My latest repair bill, which was more of a restoration of an older instrument was $629 for: clean/oil/adjust with keys removed, repadding (6) plus several key corks and silencers, fixed a cracked key, several crack refills, 12 posts reglued for stability/leaking, 3rd octave reset/sealed for leaking, plus general cosmetic touchup. The oboe (Gordet) now seals completely and is a gorgeous complement to my Loree.
