I think reed rush is the rather primitive plant known as horsetails. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horsetail) Horsetails have a lot of fine silica crystals on their exterior surface, which can be used like sandpaper. I remember, vaguely, Don Plesnicar selling them back when I still got cane from him (that was quite a while back). I think I may have even ordered some to try, but I certainly didn't use them much, if at all.
