 dark vs. bright?

i find that the correct concept of playing is rather more important than the concept of sound, once you have governed the technical facilities of the oboe, it all depends on personal preferences doesnt it?

good music is the result, (quoted: arnold jacob, former principal tuba CSO)
Schellenberger definitely sounds amazing doesn't he? Is he no better than Alex Klein? They are both virtuosos to me and i enjoy listening to them play almost anything.

it seems that the dark vs. bright thingy is getting into my nerves. these days, i don't even care so much to see whether i have these what you call dark sound anymore, because i don't really know what a dark sound is!

In the american style of playing, the complicated ideas and almost too difficult to make reed style takes up most of the oboists time and the fact that less musical students are evolving are definitely true! This is not critisism and i'm not trying to create something to wash people's minds but i think we should all just focus on the musical aspects and also the universal accepted ideas of oboe playing.

what i want to emphasize here is that the main basics of playing, i.e. projection, intonation, basic tone structure, expression, and technique should be discussed first in a student's development rather than tonal preferences. but it so happens that students will only be thought of the specific styles and concepts of playing governed to them.

in fact, i myself never got a teacher in the first place, and when i got myself exposed to this sort of thing (american? dutch? english? german?), i got a little bit confused. my teacher is a follower of the concertgebouw color, or more well known as the dutch resemblance, and it seems that reed and even technical ideas seem to colide with what i know from the american style!

dark vs. bright? i say it all depends on the music itself!
