It is always a good idea to go back to basics when performing demands are lighter -- those long tones and scales in varying dynamics, for example. One thing which I now (in my senior years) have to do much more of to ensure that I have consistent support is exercise. I used to do 300 sit-ups, in a variety of positions, per day when I was younger. Now I do 50-100, but could really use more. The theory is that if the support muscles are fit, you will use them automatically. That at least is a good start. After that, remember about building the support and pressure prior to removing the tongue from the reed, and maintaining through the note and after the note is finished. Think back to your beginning oboe lessons and what your teacher used to instruct you on this. Remember to keep your shoulders relaxed, to take in air to the lower part of your lungs, and not to overfill the lungs. And thank you for reminding us all about the basics.
