I find that the German school of playing is characterized by a full round tone...i recently bought Mayer's Mozart album (In Search of Mozart) and I absolutely love the way he plays the Concerto. It's very musical and as someone else pointed out, he can make those notes sing! Lothar Koch's version of the Strauss is one of my favorites. Overall, I still prefer Klein and Izotov for their total virtuosity, but Mayer is a formidable player.
