Hey Claire,
I'm the friend JRJINSA was referring to. We were just talking about the duduk the other day. I bought one from Istanbul a few months ago. I think the one i got is in G as they come in different sizes. It has seven holes and one hole for the left thumb. It IS kinda hard to play that instrument but then I"m not sure how is the key system works. I'm sure you can make out different notes by doing different fingering but I didnt really try. The reeds are 1 inch wide and 3.5 inches long. Like EH reeds it has a wire to control the opening of the reeds since it's pretty big though it's not really wire but two pieces of cane cut in the shape of ovals and tied together with thread.
When I came back home, Kuwait, the reeds changed ALOT!! When I played it in Turkey even though I had no idea what I was doing it sounded really nice. I think if you are familiar with Middle Eastern music you might be able to play without a teacher as in my opinion such instruments are all about improvisation!
You can find the instrumet on Amazon actually as well as the reeds. However when I was looking for it in Istanbul I found a pro duduk maker. The ones you find on amazon and the one i have are not pro I think. The same goes for the reeds as well. And that guy can make you a duduk but it wasnt very cheap.
There is this video of this boy playing on the duduk on youtube and he is AMAZING!!! Check it out.
cheers
