Hi! I was thrilled to find this forum. I played oboe extensively throughout high school and college, even very semi-professionally after college (i.e., I made some money but not close to enough to live on!). I then put down the oboe several years ago and haven't picked it up since. I miss it so much and am getting back into playing now.
When I played before, I played on pretty hard reeds that I made myself. Unfortunately, I can only barely remember how to make reeds, and I don't really have the time or inclination right now to put into re-learning (although I hope to in the future).
I expect that, since I haven't played in a while, I'll need a medium reed to get started up again.
Can anyone recommend good sites online to purchase a quality, hand-made reed? The ones I've looked at include Charles Double Reed Company (www.charlesmusic.com), Chicago Reed Company (www.chicagoreedcompany.com), and Stellar Oboe Products (www.oboe.net). These three appear good, but you never can tell online - has anyone had experience with any of these companies, or others, that you would be willing to tell me about?
I would really appreciate hearing about anyone's experiences buying reeds online. Thanks so much!
