If you haven't got access to a bench vice, you can use the edge of a solid wooden door to widen the cradle - place the cradle over the edge of a door and bend it both to the left and right to widen it. I did this to fit a contrabassoon edge on (by the LH thumb cluster) in my bass clarinet stand.
