 Scam Alert!!!
Author: Joe M.

I just received the following email.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
paula@worldwind.co.uk subject: JQ530159079

The BPay transaction, just sent from your company"s bank account, was rejected by the other financial institution.

Denied transfer
BPay file Case ID H1116736
Total 32455.86 AU Dollars
E-mail ?????@????.net.au

Reason for rejection See attached MS Word doc

Please open the document enclosed below to see more info about this issue.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You all know that this is a scam and the attached document has a nasty in it, but what worries me is that I was almost certainly targeted because I posted to this board. Please be alert about supposed woodwind emails and don't open them or any of the attachments.

Keep safe.

Why would would you think that (though it's possible - and of course you can hide your email by clicking a box in your profile)? Worldwind is not close to woodwind - and my email is everywhere. If you looked at my scam and spam on a daily basis (I get between 800 and a 1000 a day) you'd think I post to Viagra and Nigerian BBoards ...

Yikes, Mark! I don't think I've gotten as many as 800 scam mails in my entire Internet history. Thanks to your expertise, you're probably the least-likely of any of us to get snookered, but condolences on having to deal with all that garbage.

Maybe this is the place to post another warning, however: the Klarinet e-mail list received several copies of a phishing attempt this week. The title was
>Fw:>
and the message contained nothing but a link. The Klarinet e-mail list doesn't show senders' IDs any more, but (as I warned the list) some of us who have corresponded privately with Richard Bush have also received these bad mailings privately from him. If you get mail from his address right now, don't click on anything in it. Just send it to your provider's spam dump.

After I got the first of these baddies, I e-mailed him privately (using my own address file and not clicking on his reply link, of course), but he never answered. I'm sure he's not the instigator. He's been a respected member of the Klarinet list for years. He's the victim of malware that's abusing his computer to spew junk.

The fake address on that link varies. It's a more dangerous variant on phishing than most such scams, because some of the variants of this link look as if they would go to legitimate addresses, including the New York Times. Beware.

Mark, I have taken lots of precautions against attacks. (It takes two 32 character "interactive password procedures" to boot my computer. Yes. I'm paranoid! I made my living for two decades from being paranoid about security.)

I have lots of email addresses and I keep track of where they go. I am fairly certain the leak was from my entry on this board. My bad NOT the board's!

A favourite trick for scammers is to make an email or web site name sound like one you are used to: "Worldwind" <-> "Woodwind". It hit me instantly especially as I only get about 2 to 4 scammails a week.

Anyway right or wrong a warning may just alert one of you guys not to click that "Accept" or "Yes" button so quickly in the future.

Thanks for that warning Lelia. You don't have to hear voices to know they are everywhere.
