 Penzel-Mueller Wooden Clarinet

I have this clarinet with 'Artist Model Penzel-Mueller NY" stamped on its barrel only. The rest of the body (upper, lower joint, bell) have the stamp "Jan William NY" .

Does anyone have any info about this horn?

Thanks

It may be that only the barrel is a Penzel-Mueller. I've never heard of a Jan William NY clarinet --- perhaps it was a stencil made by someone else; maybe even P-M. Or there may be others on this board who know about the Jan William model.

I had a Jan Williams clarinet and sold it to a gentleman in UK who repadded it for his daughter. It was an older French made clarinet, not sure who actually made it but it was a decent old horn with a nice sound.

Thank you guys.

From what I gathered from the internet, it seems that there was one particular 'Jan Williams' who was a clarinet player / song writer in the 30s and 40s.

Jan Williams was one of the youngest members of the John Phillip Sousa band when he officially joined in 1901 at the age of 17. He had played with them as well in 1899. He designed his own make of clarinet which was at the time highly regarded for its rich tonal quality. He supervised the construction and fine tuned each one before it left the factory. These are not French stencils, they were made in the factory that was eventually torn down to make room for the U. N. I'd rather have the old clarinet factory.

Wonderful site gives more information, much of it from his son. http://www.clarinetpages.net/vintage-odd-brands/jan-williams

I studied with Mr. Williams at the U of Tampa in 1963-64.I never played on his line of Clarinets, but I had a chance to play on a set of Selmer b flat and a set with silver keys the Selmer company gave him-The keys were black from not being polished for a while-I used silver polish a they did come back but needed more work.He was a solid teacher-He took me through the entire Baermann Method all five parts-nice stuff-He gave me all the music plus the piano part to part 4-He always had a story or two or three to tell during the lessons-He was a teacher and friend-I always think of him when I play the old Method

I studied Clarinet at the U of Tampa in 1963-64. Mr Williams was a great teacher and friend-The lessons were solid and fun-His talks were as good as his Lessons-I did meet his son -He visited his dad from time to time while he stated in Tampa-His son was a very good English teacher-well read -Had a chance to play on His Silver keyed clarinets that the Selmer Company gave him Bflat and A-What great fun-He would tell wonderful stories of his time in the different Orchestras and about there Conductors-Being 19 I enjoyed the experience and would like to do it all over again- You can never learn enough
