Well, it just goes 'ta show ya that one size doesn't fit all.
My oldest son started in middle school with the 5RV and trad. VD 2.5s day one and never had a bit of problem making a note with that combo (it's what the school required for all beginning students who didn't take private lessons yet). He used Mitchel Lurie 3s and 3.5s with it later (Mitchel Luries are about a 1/2 strength softer than trad. VDs).
Anything softer didn't work. For him.
