I have a student who picked up a very nice Yamaha 32 (or maybe 34?) but the barrel included with the instrument is about 2mm longer than my Buffet R13's barrel. I don't have an accurate measurement for that difference.
My student is always very flat in band at school and she says she's always trying to bring her pitch up with embouchure and tongue adjustments.
My question: Is there a replacement barrel which will work well for her? The only Yamaha barrels I'm finding are for the CSGs. Will those work with this older intermediate instrument? Does anyone know of any other models and/or sources that can get her in tune for under $150?

HI,
i played as a performance major and various pro gigs for about 14 years using Yamaha YCL 82-2/85-2 Custom clarinets. On these clarinets i found that the aftermarket barrels made for Buffet clarinets worked well. As far as I know this is likely to be the case for the clarinet you describe. There are a number of options in a variety of price ranges. I have had good experience with the Muncy synthetic barrels (in terms of $/value if your student has a limited budget).

I don't see any reason why any standard barrel such as 'donald' mentions would not work. But DO NOT get a CSG barrel for they are about 10mm shorter than a 'standard' size (CSG top joints are correspondingly LONGER).

Instead of finding an aftermarket barrel, you can have the original one shortened. The pitch difference will be roughly 5 cents per millimeter.
(When I have to shorten barrels to bring the pitch up to European A=442, then I go from 66 down to 64.5mm)
Edit: before you do anything else, check if the student isn't using a Vandoren Series "13" mouthpiece - these were specifically designed to bring the pitch (of an R13) down...

The Muncy Synthetic is a great barrel for a superb price, ~$70:

Backun also makes one call the Protege that is $99.
I've used both with student clarinets (Buffet B10 and B12, Yamaha 250, 23, 32, etc.) always with significant improvements over the stock barrels.
Just make sure you get one that's short enough to allow for some adjustment!

Shorting the existing one costs about $20 and is a 5 minute job. A new barrel is at least three times that price...

Thanks guys,
She's not on a Vandy 13, and I know it's definitely the barrel. This should give me enough options. I don't have a reputable enough tech here for barrel shortening (although I'm sure there is one nearby; I just don't know who to recommend).

Ok...So someone please enlighten my non-numerical mind. My Buffet R13 barrel is around 2 3/8 inches long. Her barrel is probably about 2 mm longer. What mm length should I have her get??? (p.s. I hate math...)

Hi Katrina,
You are probably looking for a 65 mm barrel. I play Yamaha customs and like them a lot. I use a 66 mm barrel, but a student/mouthpiece combo playing flat will like a 65 mm better. You don't have to get a Moennig or chadash or anything fancy!

Thanks Eric. I'm horrible with numbers. I remember when I purchased a Click barrel a number of years ago some company made one which went as short as 59 mm which I wanted to like but it wouldn't fit on my R13. I most often play with an accordionist whose lowest-tuned accordion is 443, so I was in the market for a short barrel. Since Click isn't an option any more, and since (IMO) the sound isn't really as good as my stock R13, I didn't mention it to this student...

A simple shortening will do fine in this setting (I assume no recitals in Carnegie Hall are scheduled for this student in the near future).
There might be some minor changes in the covered (RH) notes, but not too bad.
I agree that the CSG is NOT usable in this situation. That is a whole 'nother game in a different league.
