I have played the original version and indeed have the parts. The scoring for this is, flute, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets in C, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, trumpet and a string bass though a contra can be used. The score says contrabasso or serpent. I can email a live recording of us playing it if you like. Mendelsshon re-scored later for the bigger group with basset horns et al
