tell me what I have plese

I've had a silver-plated clarinet for years. It only separates at the mouthpiece. It is marked "soloiste USA" on the bell and carries the serial number 3867 9 . It has a black leather hard case similar in shape to that of a flute with no markings and olive green fabric liner. It needs a good polishing and oiling but does not appear to be very worn. All e-mails regarding info to rlk@vermontel.net would be most kindly appreciated.

I wish I could help, but I can't. I'm kinda wondering the samething myself right now. I don't have it yet, but I recently bought a velvetone one piece clarinet with a removable mouth piece with a serial number of 1522A. Did a search on the internet for velvetone clarinets....couldn't find anything! I did find a velvetone saxophone by accident. My husband is teasing me that I bought a sax instead of a clarinet! Pictures though it is a clarinet.

Hope you find your answers,
Have a Wonderful day!
Deborah

H and D - Since no one seems to have heard of your metals, I'll try. Most metal [plated brass or steel, not silver] cls were made by several USA [and some Fr] makers, for the student-sale, and were given a variety of trade-names no longer traceable, except [possibly] by maker-location [if given]. The better ones did carry maker's names such as Bettoney, Noblet, Selmer?, Conn?, etc. So, I refer to the somewhat-poorer multitude as E Pluribus Unum [one of/from many] horns. I believe Jim Lange is our BBoard expert on metals, perhaps he will help us out? Luck, Don

Sorry, Jim LANDE, in a hurry, I guess. For those who dont know, Jim is the proud owner of many metal cls, and discusses them on the Yahoo Early Clarinet site. Don

Thanks for the info. I don't know if it will help me or not. I haven't found any other velvetone clarinets or anything about them yet. However I have found a couple of Velvetone Saxophones and they had them dating back to the late 1890's to the early 1930's. Most instrument places seem to do more then one.....so it would seem reasonable that maybe the same company made both. However the one I'm getting that I've seen the pictures of just doesn't seem that old to me. Maybe 50ish years....

Oh well....it's fun trying to learn (even if frustrating at times). By now my children are so excited about it! All 4 of them are asking for lessons already and it's not even here yet!:) Hopefully in the next 1 to 3 weeks. What a long time!

Have a Wonderful day!
Deborah

I have a Velvetone metal clarinet. I've had it for 43 years. My Grandfather gave it to me. He was a dance band leader and jazz drummer. He said they were used in the US military for playing outside but didn't catch on. He lived in Conn. USA I've never heard of anyone else having one. It has a serial no. If you're still online and reply Deborah, I'll have a look.
